A Rae of Sunshine: Celebrating Strength, Spirit, and the Power of Personality | Rhode Island Newborn & Family Photographer

March 5, 2025 by Sarah Zollo

Some clients leave a lasting mark on our hearts, and Raelyn and her family are among them. We first met Rae as a toddler and were instantly captivated—her infectious smile, the sparkle in her eyes, and those incredible eyelashes! She was sweet, joyful, and full of life. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of capturing many memories for this beautiful family, but her most inspiring journey unfolded in a way no one could have imagined.

A Journey of Strength and Resilience

In the fall of 2021, Rae’s parents heard the words no parent is ever prepared for: “Her blood work is consistent with cancer.” The diagnosis—Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia—meant immediate chemotherapy, an extended hospital stay, and a whirlwind of medical treatments. The months that followed were filled with pain, uncertainty, and moments no child should have to endure. But through it all, Rae remained her sparkly self—strong, expressive, and brave.

When doctors determined that chemotherapy alone wouldn’t be enough, Rae underwent a bone marrow transplant in July 2022. This required intensive chemo, whole-body radiation, and another long hospital stay. While the list of potential side effects was daunting, Rae beat the odds, experiencing only minor complications. After 30 days inpatient, she was able to go home—but not without challenges. Strict isolation orders kept her from school, friends, and all the things she loved. It was an emotional and physical battle, but one she fought with grace and resilience.

A Full Circle Moment: Capturing Rae’s Personality

Through this journey, Raelyn continued to be her sparkly self: expressive and assertive, strong and sweet, scared and brave, all at once. She has maintained a wonderfully positive attitude about her journey. Her magical spirit has never wavered.

During her treatment, Rae received an American Girl Doll that looked just like her, bald and beautiful. As Rae’s hair began to grow back, she wanted her doll to grow with her. After a trip to the doll hospital, her little lookalike had a brand-new head of luscious hair—just like Rae. What a powerful moment of healing, hope, and moving forward.

When Rae and her family visited our studio recently for a Personality Session, “Little Rae” joined too! Their matching smiles (and fabulous hair!) made for the sweetest photos, a true celebration of just how far Rae has come.

And let us tell you—Rae showed up to her session in STYLE. She picked out her own outfit, complete with a tulle skirt and a sparkly jacket (the cardigan sweater Mom suggested was vetoed). Little bro rocked his new faux hawk and favorite overalls—he’s obsessed with all things farm life.

Capturing these moments was pure joy. There were big smiles, dancing to Taylor Swift, and a few behind-the-scenes antics as we tried to coax a grin out of serious little bro. The love between this family? Completely undeniable.
